    Facts about Brooklyn Bridge:


  • One of the oldest suspension bridges in United Satets, stretches over the East River connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

  • Master piece of the Roebling’s family, designed by the brilliant engineer John Augustus Roebling and completed by his son Washington Roebling oppened to traffic in May 1883.

  • Brooklyn Bridge towers are 273 feet (83.2 m) high and the length of main span across East River is 1,595 feet, 6 inches (486.3 m) long. Total length of the bridge is 5,989 feet (1,825.5 m).

  • Bridge opened to public on May 24, 1883 and total of 150,300 people (charged 1 cent to cross) and 1800 vehicles (charged 5 cents to cross) crossed opening day.

  • Today the Brooklyn Bridge has six lanes for motor vehicles, with a separate walkway along the centerline for pedestrians and bicycles. Due to the roadway's height (11 feet = 3.35 m posted) and weight (6,000 lb = 2.7 t posted) restrictions, commercial vehicles and buses are prohibited from using this bridge.

  • The Brooklyn Bridge has a wide pedestrian walkway open to walkers and cyclists, in the center of the bridge and higher than the automobile lanes.

  • Each of four supporting cables, 15 ½ inches (394 mm) in diameter, contains 19 strands, containing 2381 wires at a total of 21,432 wires in each cable.
