    Interesting Facts about Golden Gate Bridge:


  • Golden Gate Bridge, is a 1.7 mile (2.7 km) long suspension bridge, world’s longest at its inauguration, over the San Francisco Bay, which connects the city with Marin County.

  • The color, called international orange, was chosen by consulting architect Irving Morrow, who thought this color best complemented the bridge’s natural setting

  • Clearance above mean higher high water of 220 ft = 67 m allowed the mammoth Queen Mary 2 cruise liner to pass beneath the Golden Gate bridge, clearing the bottom of the span by 27 feet = 8.2 m

  • Two elegant suspension towers, reaching a height of 746 ft = 227m, hold two main cables of 36 3/8 in. = 0 .92 m in diameter

  • The initial car toll in 1937, only collected from vehicles heading south into San Francisco, was 50 cents.

  • Bridge is exposed to enormous gusts, but so far it was closed only three times due to wind, in the Decembers of 1951 (69 mph winds), 1982 (70 mph winds), and 1983 (75 mph winds).
