  • The United States Capitol serves as the seat of government for the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government

  • In addition to its active use by Congress, the Capitol is a museum of American art and history, visited each year by an estimated 3-5 million people from around the world

  • DC history began in 1790 when Congress directed selection of a new capital site, 100 sq mi, along the Potomac river. The cornerstone of Capitol was laid by President Washington in1793, but with all its extensions the complex was only completed in 1868

  • The first Capitol dome was removed in 1856, and new masonry was placed on the existing Rotunda walls. Iron used in the new dome construction had an aggregate weight of 8,909,200 pounds = 4,041,213 kg

  • Cast in bronze, the Statue of Freedom on the top of the dome, is 19 feet 6 inches = 5.94 m tall with weight of 14,985 pounds = 6.797 kg, almost 3 feet 0.91 m taller than originally specified

  • The Capitol length, from north to south, is 751 feet 4 inches = 229 m; its greatest width, including approaches, is 350 feet = 106.68 m. Its height above the base line on the east front to the top of the Statue of Freedom is 288 feet = 87.78 m

  • The Capitol is open to the public for guided tours only, Monday through Saturday and all federal holidays except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
