  • Times Square is the name used for the area between 40th and 53rd street and 6th and 9th avenue, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and forms a critical intersection in Manhattan, New York City.

  • An amazing 1.7 million people pass through Times Square each day. 13,200 hotel rooms are located in Times Square and 274,000 people work directly in Times Square each day.

  • As the center of the Theater district Times Square always attracted a large number of visitors. This made the square an ideal place for billboards. The first large electric display billboard was installed in 1917, the first scrolling electric sign was lit 11 years later.

  • Times Square is probably the only neighborhood with zoning ordinances requiring building owners to display illuminated signs. The chaos of hundreds of advertisements, giant screens, LED news-crawlers, and multi-story billboards screaming 24/7 for viewers' attention is the outcome .

  • One of the most noticeable displays is the curved seven-story NASDAQ sign at the NASDAQ Market Site at 4 Times Square on 43rd Street. It cost $37 million to build and stands 120 feet (36.6m) high. NASDAQ pays more than $2 million a year to lease the space for this sign.

  • Times Square has been the main spot to celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City since December 31, 1907, when a ball signifying New Year's Day was first dropped. On average, about 750,000 revelers crowd Times Square for the New Year's Eve celebrations.

  • Yes, even the busiest place in the world can be shut down. In a scene in the 2001 film Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise is shown alone in Times Square. Times Square was shut down for three hours to film this scene.
