    Interesting Facts about Point Bonita Lighthouse:


  • Point Bonita Lighthouse is the guardian of the northern tip of the Golden Gate, still casting forth a guiding beacon for mariners.

  • Located on the extreme southwestern tip of the Marin Headlands, at the San Francisco Bay entrance

  • It was the third lighthouse to be built on the West Coast following Alcatraz and Fort Point

  • The lighthouse went into operation on February 2, 1877, replacing the original building, a 56-foot tall conical brick tower built in 1855.

  • Lighthouse elevation is 124 feet (38 m) above sea level

  • Open to public Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, reservation needed for a special full-moon tour.
