- Portland Head Light Station is a lighthouse located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA and it probably is the most photographed lighthouse in North America. The popular landmark is owned and managed by the Town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
- Construction of a lighthouse began In 1787 after the General Court of Massachusetts provided $750 as initial funding and the lighthouse was first lit on January 10, 1791 after United States Government appropriated $1,500 for its completion.
- The original Lighthouse tower measured 72' from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16 whale oil lamps.
- Portland Head Light stands today 80 feet (24.38 m) above ground and 101 feet ( 30.78 m) above water, its white conical tower being connected with a keeper's house.
- Portland Head Light is situated along the spectacular shores of Fort Williams Park, at 1000 Shore Road, Fort Williams Park is open year round from sunrise to sunset and there is no admission fee.
- The Museum at Portland Head Light is open daily from Memorial Day to the Friday following Columbus Day. From mid April to Memorial Day and from Columbus Day to just before Christmas the Museum is open weekends only. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The admission fee is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children age 6-18. Children younger than 6 are free.
- Travel Directions from Interstate 295 in Portland: take Highway 77 south to Broadway. Go east on Broadway for 0.2 miles and then turn right onto Cottage Road. After a mile, Cottage Road will become Shore Road, which will lead you to Fort Williams State Park where the lighthouse is located.
