Interesting Facts about the Emerald Pools in Zion National Park:
- Emerald Pools trail is one of the famous trails in Zion National Park, around 15 miles (24 km) long and up to half a mile (800 m) deep Zion Canyon, located in the Southwestern United States, near Springdale, Utah.
- Mukuntuweap National Monument was established in 1909 to protect the canyon, and by 1919 the monument was expanded to become Zion National Park (Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning a place of refuge or sanctuary).
- The Emerald Pools Trail was completed in 1925 and named due to the green tint the algae gives the three pools.
- Emerald Pools trail, 3 miles round trip, starts near Zion Lodge, half way along Zion Canyon, and heads towards the mountains opposite, following a stream up.
- Lower Emerald Pool is and easy, 0 .6 mile one way long, trip with 69' ascent, which takes about 30 minutes. Middle Emerald Pools are another 0.4 mile further up, but with steeper150' ascent and to see Upper Pool, there is another steep 0.5 mile with 350' ascent to conquer.
- The most spectacular Upper Pool Waterfall rewords its visitors during winter and spring with powerful, 492 ft = 150 m high, waterfall cascades down the rock face, though in summer this flow dries up completely.
- Accessing Emerald Pools trails from late March to November, park at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and ride the shuttle. The rest of the year, drive into Zion Canyon and park at the Emerald Pools parking lot.
